Fatal Craig, Montana kayaking death of Melvin Scarberry – Obituary

Authorities have confirmed that 56-year-old Melvin Scarberry of Florida died after being found in the Missouri River near Craig, Montana, on Saturday. The Lewis and Clark County Sheriff’s Office identified Scarberry as the individual recovered from the water following a report of a missing kayaker.

Emergency services were alerted around 5:20 p.m. on May 24 after Scarberry was reported missing while kayaking. Just twenty minutes later, a fishing guide and his clients spotted an unoccupied kayak and a man’s body in the river.

Rescue teams quickly responded and attempted life-saving efforts, but Scarberry could not be revived. Responding agencies included Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks, local fire departments from Wolf Creek and Craig, the Lewis and Clark County Sheriff’s Office, and St. Peter’s Ambulance.

An official cause and manner of death will be determined and released following an autopsy by the Montana State Crime Lab.
