John Edwards dies in fatal Wednesbury house fire

Fatal Wednesbury house fire death of John Edwards – Obituary

John Edwards, 82, passed away in the hospital two weeks after he was pulled from a serious house fire in Wednesbury, West Midlands, on May 11. His death has prompted a murder investigation.

Authorities confirmed that emergency responders rescued Edwards from the burning semi-detached home. Despite medical intervention, he died on Sunday, May 25.

Three other individuals—an elderly man and woman, and a man in his 50s—also suffered severe injuries during the fire. They are currently reported to be in critical but stable condition.

Andrew Gorrell, 53, of Saltney in Chester, had already been charged with arson and three counts of grievous bodily harm with intent in relation to the incident. Following Edwards’ death, police have now launched a murder inquiry and are working closely with the Crown Prosecution Service to assess the charges against Gorrell.

The West Midlands Fire Service confirmed that the blaze was extinguished and that an investigation into the cause is still ongoing.

West Midlands Police extended their condolences to Edwards’ family and urged the public to come forward with any information related to the fire. Officers are particularly interested in hearing from anyone who was near the scene on the night of May 10 or early morning of May 11. An online portal has been established for the submission of tips, photos, or video evidence.
