Fatal Ypsilanti Township hit-and-run death of Shawn Mullin – Obituary

Shawn Mullin, a 52-year-old man from Michigan, died after being struck by a vehicle early Sunday morning, May 25, 2025, along I-94 in Ypsilanti Township. Authorities believe Mullin had exited his vehicle, possibly due to mechanical issues, before he was hit by an unidentified driver who fled the scene.

Mullin’s father, Lester Mullin, suspects his son’s car may have broken down near the Rawsonville Road exit shortly before the incident. Emergency crews had received a report of a nude man walking in the wrong direction on the westbound side of I-94, and Huron Valley Ambulance personnel witnessed the collision before reaching him.

Mullin was found less than 1,000 feet from his car. His father remains puzzled about why he was unclothed at the time, stating it was completely out of character for him. Police later recovered what they believe to be a piece of the vehicle involved, described as a black sedan. No arrests have been made, and the case is still under investigation pending toxicology results.

Lester described Shawn as a caring person with a generous heart, known for his love of dogs and for frequently helping others—even giving away a mobile home to a housemate he appreciated. Shawn, who had dealt with mild schizophrenia in his youth, lived independently as an adult and worked in both maintenance and food services.

At the time of his death, Shawn had no children but was survived by his father and three siblings. A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to help cover funeral costs.
