Fatal Dartmouth, N.S. shooting death of Tyson Cain – Obituary
Tyson Cain has been identified by his family as the man killed in a daytime shooting in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, on Thursday.
Halifax Regional Police responded to the scene around noon, near Highfield Park Drive and True North Crescent, where a man in his 50s was discovered with gunshot wounds inside a vehicle. Despite officers attempting to resuscitate him, Cain was declared dead at the location.
Authorities have not officially confirmed the identity pending autopsy results, but loved ones say the victim was Cain. The case remains under investigation, with officers conducting interviews and searching for potential witnesses. According to Const. Paul Desrochers, police do not believe the incident was random.
Cain’s family is devastated by the loss. His aunt, Cyndi Cain-Holmes, expressed disbelief and sorrow, recalling how she rushed from work and repeatedly tried to call him, only to be met with silence. “When I arrived and saw the crowd, I just knew something terrible had happened,” she said.
Cain-Holmes described Tyson as more than a nephew — they were close like siblings. She shared that he had plans to build a children’s summer camp on land he purchased in Lawrencetown, N.S. At 52, she said, he was entering a promising chapter in life.
“He was a creative thinker, a visionary, someone who truly cared about his family, his children, and the wider community,” she said.
Cain was also known for his culinary skills and ran his own restaurant. A family friend, Giselle Cunningham, emphasized that Cain had moved away from street life and focused on uplifting others. “He wasn’t involved in anything like that anymore. He was a good man,” she said.
His passion for food and music, as well as his role as a loving father, are among the qualities his family and friends say they will remember most. Cain-Holmes added, “He changed lives, mentored young men, and gave so much of himself. His death just doesn’t make sense.”
Police are urging anyone with information or footage related to the shooting to contact them, as they continue working to piece together what happened. Const. Desrochers noted they are particularly interested in identifying any individuals or vehicles connected to the crime.
