Leonardo Machado dies in fatal West Vancouver bus crash

Fatal West Vancouver bus crash death of Leonardo Machado – Obituary

Four-year-old Leonardo Machado tragically lost his life on May 28, 2025, after a bus jumped the curb and struck him and his mother while they were waiting at a bus stop near the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal in West Vancouver. His mother, Silvana de Oliveira Schramm, suffered severe injuries and remains in critical condition, while another woman was also hospitalized but in stable condition.

The day began with a bright, sunny outing when Silvana and Leonardo took a trip to Bowen Island, off the coast of Metro Vancouver. Silvana sent pictures to her husband, Clineu Machado, including one of Leonardo beaming on the ferry’s sundeck. That photo would be the last she shared before the devastating accident occurred later that afternoon back on the mainland.

Witnesses reported seeing the bus veer over the curb, striking the pair at the bus stop. Emergency services arrived quickly, but Leonardo was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the bus, employed by TransLink, has been interviewed, and the vehicle is being inspected as part of the investigation. Authorities have not ruled out criminal charges, though speed is not believed to have been a factor.

Friends and colleagues of the family have started an online fundraiser to assist with funeral expenses, travel for relatives from Brazil, and medical care for Silvana. Leonardo is remembered fondly as the couple’s “one-per-cent miracle baby,” a testament to the joy he brought to his parents despite challenges.

Clineu, who has worked multiple jobs since Leonardo’s birth to support his family, remains deeply affected but emphasizes faith and resilience in the face of tragedy. “Sometimes the tragedy wins, and sometimes you’re able to succeed by taking lessons from the tragedy and learning from that,” he shared through a family friend.

TransLink’s CEO expressed sorrow over the incident and pledged cooperation with the ongoing police investigation. The local community continues to rally around the family, offering support, privacy, and compassion during this difficult time.
