Robert Houston, 64, was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound Sunday afternoon in what authorities are calling a murder-suicide at a home in Dover Township, Ohio. Officials say Houston shot his wife, April Houston, 53, before taking his own life.

The Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call around 1:30 p.m. from a woman who said she was at the home preparing for a graduation party when gunshots rang out. The celebration was for a child who lives on the property, though the child was not at the residence at the time of the shooting.

Deputies arrived to find Robert Houston dead in bed and April Houston gravely wounded on the floor nearby. She was rushed to a hospital in Cleveland, where she later died.

According to CBS affiliate WTRF, the couple lived together at the residence. Investigators believe the case was a murder-suicide but have not yet determined what prompted the violent act.

The shooting occurred just hours before a family gathering was set to begin on the property. No other injuries were reported, and law enforcement has not released any further details as the investigation continues.
