Fatal Philadelphia shooting death of Derwin Darnell Joseph Matthews Jr. – Obituary

Derwin Darnell Joseph Matthews Jr., 31, was shot early Monday morning on South Camac Street in Philadelphia’s Gayborhood, just hours after the city’s Pride March and Festival wrapped up.

Authorities say the shooting occurred shortly after 2:30 a.m. Matthews, a Philadelphia resident, suffered a gunshot wound to the stomach and was transported to Jefferson Hospital. He was pronounced dead at 6:20 a.m.

Known affectionately as Derwin West Prodigy in his community, Matthews was remembered by close friend Jacen Bowman, president of Philadelphia Black Pride, who had embraced him during the celebrations the night before. Bowman expressed shock and deep sorrow, saying, “I literally just hugged you, and now you’re no longer here with us.”

Bowman described Matthews as a caring and warm-hearted individual who had a passion for cooking and a gift for uplifting others.

He urged anyone with knowledge about the incident to contact authorities to help bring justice. “Now is not the time to be quiet,” Bowman said.

Philadelphia Police Department’s Homicide Unit is actively investigating the case.
