Fatal Merced County bicycle crash death of Anthony Mendoza – Obituary

Anthony Mendoza, 27, tragically lost his life Tuesday evening in a collision on Belcher Avenue, west of Highway 59, in Merced County.

According to the California Highway Patrol, Mendoza was riding a silver BMX-style bicycle eastbound when he was struck from behind by a 2012 Toyota Tacoma driven by a 23-year-old Merced man.

The CHP reported that Mendoza was wearing dark clothing and was not equipped with lights or reflectors, and the area lacked street or ambient lighting, contributing to low visibility.

The driver did not see Mendoza before the impact, which caused Mendoza to be thrown onto the south shoulder while the bicycle landed on the north shoulder.

After the crash, the driver returned home and notified his father, who then contacted law enforcement. Mendoza was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities said there is no indication that drugs or alcohol played a role in the incident. The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
