Fatal North Carolina Interstate 77 crash death of Shane Charles McCurdy – Obituary

Shane Charles McCurdy, age 18, lost his life in a deadly three-vehicle collision on Interstate 77 North on Saturday night in North Carolina. The accident occurred around 10:20 p.m. and involved a 2023 Hyundai Santa Cruz, a 2015 Dodge Caravan, and a 2003 Toyota Corolla.

According to investigators, the drivers of the Hyundai, 72-year-old Terry Shane Brown, and the Dodge, 74-year-old Donald Storrer Bethune, had stopped in the left lane after their initial crash. The Toyota Corolla, driven by 22-year-old Emma Leigh Garwood, failed to slow down and crashed into the Dodge, which then hit both the Hyundai and the two men standing beside the vehicles.

Garwood, Brown, and Bethune were rushed to the hospital. While Garwood and Brown suffered non-life-threatening injuries, Bethune remains in critical condition. Sadly, McCurdy, Garwood’s passenger, was declared dead at the scene.

The highway was shut down for two hours while authorities investigated the crash. No signs of impairment have been confirmed as a factor. Garwood faces charges including misdemeanor death by vehicle and failure to reduce speed.
