Krystal Rivera, a 36-year-old Chicago police officer, lost her life during a deadly encounter on June 5 in the 8200 block of South Drexel.
According to Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling, Rivera, a dedicated officer with four years of service and a mother to a young daughter, was involved in an attempted investigatory stop of a suspected armed individual. When the suspect fled, officers pursued on foot into an apartment. Inside, they were confronted by a second armed person who pointed a rifle at the officers, leading to an exchange of gunfire. Rivera was struck by gunfire during the incident and later died at the hospital.
Superintendent Snelling described Rivera as “young, vibrant, and hardworking,” emphasizing her commitment to making Chicago safer. Rivera’s mother shared that her daughter loved her job and was driven to improve the community.
The two suspects fled the scene but were captured shortly after by police. Another officer was injured but is reported to be in fair condition. Authorities recovered three firearms at the location.
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson praised Rivera’s energetic and courageous approach to policing and pledged to honor her memory. Rivera had already confiscated two weapons earlier in her shift, demonstrating her dedication to her duty.
