Fatal Alaska Denali National Park climbing accident death of Alex Chiu – Obituary

Alex Chiu, a 41-year-old man from Seattle, tragically lost his life after falling approximately 3,000 feet while ski mountaineering in Alaska. The accident took place on June 2 along the West Buttress climbing route of Mt. McKinley, near the Peters Glacier in Denali National Park.

 

Chiu, who was not secured by a rope, fell from a challenging section known as Squirrel Point, which is a steep and exposed rocky face covered with seracs. Two other members of his expedition witnessed the fall and attempted to reach him by lowering themselves over the edge, but they were unable to locate or hear him afterward.

 

Authorities confirmed that Chiu’s fall was fatal, marking a tragic loss in the mountaineering community. The incident highlights the extreme risks associated with ski mountaineering in remote and rugged terrains like Denali National Park.
