Fatal Gaston County shooting death of Jeffery Carter – Obituary
Jeffery Carter, 40, lost his life after being shot outside his residence in Gaston County during the early hours of April 19. Authorities reported the incident occurred just after 3 a.m. on Hawkins Street, near Proctor Street in Gastonia.
Police arrived at the scene following gunfire reports and discovered Carter with a gunshot wound in his front yard. He was later confirmed to be an unintended victim with no connection to the altercation that led to the shooting. Investigators believe Carter was merely standing outside his home while a dispute stemming from a nearby party escalated into violence.
According to law enforcement officials, two suspects, 22-year-old Keith McClure and 21-year-old Jasmionta Mackey, were arrested and charged with first-degree murder. Both are currently being held without bond.
Authorities also linked the suspects to an earlier incident on April 18 at Legends, a venue located on West Main Avenue, roughly ten minutes from where Carter was killed. Details of the initial incident remain unclear, and police continue to seek public assistance with information related to the case.
Assistant Police Chief Nancy Brogdon called the killing a “tragic and senseless loss of life,” underscoring that Carter had no involvement in the conflict that led to his death.
