Authorities in Vermilion County have confirmed the identity of the man killed in a hit-and-run incident early Sunday morning in Tilton as 44-year-old Mitchell Leon Burks Jr. of Tilton, Illinois.
According to a report from the Vermilion County Sheriff’s Department, the fatal collision occurred shortly before 2:00 a.m. on June 8 along the 100 block of West 7th Street. Deputies and Tilton Police responded to a 911 call around 6:00 a.m. from a passerby who discovered Burks unresponsive in the roadway.
Investigators later determined that Andre Sanders, 36, of Danville, was driving west on 7th Street when he struck Burks. Sanders reportedly exited his vehicle, saw that he had hit someone, and then fled without contacting emergency services or alerting authorities.
