Angelina Resendiz dies in fatal Norfolk discovery near Richard Bowling Elementary School
Fatal Norfolk body recovery death of Angelina Resendiz – Obituary
The remains found Monday evening in a wooded area close to Richard Bowling Elementary School in Norfolk have been confirmed as those of 21-year-old Navy sailor Angelina Resendiz, who had been reported missing since May 29.
Her family received official confirmation Tuesday and issued a statement expressing their heartbreak and demanding accountability for failures in communication and response surrounding her disappearance.
Resendiz was last seen at her barracks at Naval Station Norfolk nearly two weeks prior. The family revealed frustration over being informed of her missing status only through media and staff rather than official military channels. Authorities have since taken DNA samples and conducted interviews as part of the investigation.
Late Tuesday, officials disclosed that an unidentified Navy sailor is being held in pretrial confinement in connection with Resendiz’s death, with charges pending. The medical examiner’s office continues to determine the exact cause and manner of death.
Resendiz’s family calls on lawmakers and military leaders to address systemic issues that allowed delays and mishandling in the case, pushing for reforms to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
