Fatal Colorado hammer throw accident death of Wade Langston – Obituary

Wade Langston, 57, tragically lost his life at a high school track and field event held at the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs when a hammer weight thrown out of bounds struck him in the stands. Langston, who was attending the meet to watch his son compete, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the El Paso County coroner’s office.

The incident occurred during a club track and field meet on Sunday and led to the immediate cancellation of the event. The hammer throw, which involves swinging and releasing a heavy metal ball attached to a wire and grip, went beyond the safety barriers and hit Langston in the spectator area.

UCCS Chancellor Jennifer Sobanet expressed sorrow over the tragic accident, emphasizing support for everyone affected. Langston’s family released a heartfelt statement remembering him as a devoted husband, loving father, and a joyful presence who brought laughter and warmth to those around him. They requested privacy as they cope with their immense loss.

The hammer throw is a less common track and field discipline in the U.S., and some states have even prohibited it in high school competitions due to safety concerns. This particular meet was part of a series hosted on the UCCS campus.
