Fatal Salt Lake City shooting death of Arthur Folasa Ah Loo – Obituary

Arthur Folasa Ah Loo, a 39-year-old Utah resident, was fatally shot during the “No Kings” protest in downtown Salt Lake City on Saturday night, June 14, 2025. The demonstration drew a crowd of roughly 10,000 people near 151 South State Street.

According to Salt Lake City Police, Ah Loo was struck by gunfire during a chaotic encounter when two armed individuals—reportedly acting as peacekeepers—confronted a man later identified as 24-year-old Arturo Gamboa. Gamboa, seen separating from the crowd and preparing a rifle behind a wall, allegedly raised the weapon and moved toward the crowd. One of the peacekeepers fired three times, hitting Gamboa and unintentionally striking Ah Loo, who was participating in the protest.

Emergency responders, including SWAT medics and Salt Lake City Fire personnel, provided medical care at the scene. Ah Loo was transported to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries.

Gamboa suffered a minor gunshot wound and was arrested. He is currently held without bail at the Salt Lake County Metro Jail under investigation for murder. Authorities say he had no prior criminal record and appeared to be acting alone. A bystander secured his backpack, which contained an AR-15 style rifle and gas mask.

Police have not charged the individual who discharged the fatal rounds. That person is cooperating with the investigation.

The organizing group behind the protest, Utah 50501, acknowledged their involvement and expressed grief over the tragic incident. Plans for a vigil honoring Ah Loo are underway.

Salt Lake City Police Chief Brian Redd praised the crowd for their cooperation, noting that demonstrators helped identify the suspect to officers in the immediate aftermath.
