Fatal Albert Lea shooting death of Nathaniel Dewitt Bailey – Obituary

Nathaniel Dewitt Bailey, 44, of Albert Lea, Minnesota, was fatally shot on June 10, 2025, during a tragic series of events that also claimed the life of his mother, Brenda Kay Krause, 66.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) confirmed the deaths following an officer-involved shooting and subsequent homicide investigation in rural Albert Lea.

Authorities were dispatched to a residence on the 21000 block of 880th Avenue after receiving reports that a man had admitted via text to killing his mother. Law enforcement located Bailey’s vehicle near Austin, Minnesota, and returned to the residence, where they encountered him armed with a handgun. Officers opened fire, and Bailey was declared dead at the scene despite efforts to provide medical assistance.

Inside the home, police discovered the body of Brenda Krause. The medical examiner determined she had died from gunshot wounds and ruled her death a homicide.

Multiple law enforcement officers involved in the shooting—including personnel from Mower, Steele, Freeborn, and Faribault counties, as well as the Albert Lea Police Department—have been placed on critical incident leave while the investigation continues. Their law enforcement experience spans from eight to twenty-four years.

Body cameras captured portions of the confrontation, and the BCA collected a handgun and several spent shell casings as evidence. The findings of the investigation will be forwarded to the Freeborn County Attorney’s Office for further review.
