DeAndre Houston dies in fatal Cleveland shooting

Fatal Cleveland shooting death of DeAndre Houston

Cleveland police are examining a series of overnight shootings that erupted across the city, the deadliest of which claimed the life of 27-year-old DeAndre Houston in the 5900 block of Luther Avenue just after midnight.

Investigators say an argument flared during an unsanctioned block party attended by roughly 100 people; within moments, fists turned to firearms and dozens of shots rang out.

Houston was fatally struck amid the chaos, while five others—a 32-year-old man, a 30-year-old man, a 27-year-old woman, a 19-year-old woman, and an 18-year-old woman—sustained injuries. Three remain hospitalized; the other two have been treated and released.

Chief Dorothy “Annie” Todd told reporters that officers recovered about 80 shell casings from multiple weapons. She condemned the decision to settle disputes with gunfire and noted that one fleeing suspect killed a dog defending its yard.

Witness Dion Barksdale, grazed in the leg, described the scene as an ambush of shots from every direction and recounted using his shirt to stanch a woman’s bleeding arm while urging her to stay conscious.

Roughly an hour later, police were called to Parkgate Avenue where an altercation between two individuals escalated, leaving a 23-year-old man dead. SWAT cleared a nearby house after residents reported the shooter ran inside, but the suspect had already fled.

Late Sunday night, separate gunfire on Carson Avenue in the Garden Valley neighborhood wounded a 13-year-old boy, now in stable condition. Cleveland Metropolitan Housing Authority Police have not released additional details.

City Council Safety Committee chair Mike Polensek decried the violence and urged the Ohio State Highway Patrol to resume traffic enforcement sweeps that previously netted guns, contraband, and fugitives within weeks.

Detectives are gathering surveillance footage and encourage anyone with information on any of the shootings to contact Cleveland police.
