Fatal New Orleans drowning death of Jameshia Selders

Officials in St. John the Baptist Parish have tentatively identified a body recovered from the Mississippi River as 20-year-old Jameshia Selders, who reportedly fell into the river near the New Orleans Riverwalk.

The body, found Saturday in LaPlace, matched Selders’ description based on visible tattoos and other identifying features, according to Sheriff Mike Tregre. While the final identification has not been officially confirmed pending autopsy results, Selders’ family believes the remains are hers.

Her cousin, Ieishe Harris, described her as “a bundle of joy,” reflecting the family’s grief and conviction that it was indeed Selders who had been found.

Selders was reported missing around 1 a.m. on June 9 while she was with friends at the Riverwalk. According to her mother, Bianca Duplessis, the incident occurred unexpectedly, leading to an emergency search.

The U.S. Coast Guard received a report that someone had fallen into the water and initiated a search that lasted for 18 hours before being called off around 6 p.m. the same day.

Authorities continue to investigate and await autopsy confirmation to officially verify the identity of the deceased.
