Fatal Wilton house fire death of Sharon Rainey

Sharon Rainey, 81, a well-known owner of the Dutch Treat ice cream stand and fast food restaurant in Wilton, Maine, tragically lost her life after a house fire at her home on Magrath Road.

The Wilton Fire Department was alerted shortly after midnight on June 14 to a blaze at Rainey’s residence. Upon arrival, a neighbor had already found 84-year-old Robert Adams outside the home, injured after reportedly jumping from a window during the fire.

Firefighters and police entered through a window to rescue Rainey, who suffered severe burns. Both Rainey and Adams were initially taken to Franklin Memorial Hospital and later transported by medical helicopter to Maine Medical Center in Portland. Rainey succumbed to her injuries, while Adams’ condition improved to fair.

Neighbors remembered Rainey as a kind woman who was always smiling and active in the community alongside Adams, who often worked in his yard.

This fire in Wilton was one of three deadly house fires across Maine over the weekend. Separate fires in Caribou and Newfield also claimed lives, with investigations ongoing. Authorities suspect a chimney fire may have caused the Wilton blaze.
