Fatal Washington D.C. crash death of Sierra Nichole Smith
A 39-year-old woman lost her life Monday evening after being struck by a military vehicle transporting equipment from the Army’s 250th anniversary celebration held at the National Mall, according to law enforcement officials who spoke with News4.
The vehicle was traveling as part of a military procession that was removing gear and equipment following the military demonstration, sources confirmed.
Authorities have not yet determined whether the military convoy bears responsibility for the deadly incident, and criminal charges have not been brought against anyone involved.
Police have confirmed the deceased pedestrian as Sierra Nichole Smith, age 39.
Emergency responders from both D.C. police and D.C. Fire and EMS were dispatched to the scene after receiving reports of a pedestrian collision at the corner of New York Avenue and Bladensburg Road in the Northeast section of the city shortly before 9:30 in the evening. Despite attempts to save her life, Smith was declared deceased at the scene, authorities reported.
The Metropolitan Police Department’s Major Crash Unit was summoned to conduct the investigation into the fatal incident.
According to initial findings from the investigation, Smith entered the roadway where she lost her footing and collapsed directly in the path of the large military transport truck. She became trapped beneath the vehicle and was pulled along the street for multiple city blocks before breaking free and being struck by a 2007 Chevrolet Suburban that was traveling behind the military truck, police reported.
Both vehicle operators remained at the location of the accident, according to police statements.
Law enforcement sources indicated to News4 that Smith showed signs of intoxication during the time of the collision.
