Fatal Prince George car crash death of Daniel Maryland Jr.
Virginia State Police have identified Daniel Maryland Jr., a 71-year-old resident of Jarratt, as the individual who died in a fiery collision on Interstate 95 in Prince George County on June 10.
The accident took place around 5:30 a.m. near the interchange with Interstate 295, just south of Petersburg. Authorities say a box truck, heading southbound, struck the left-side guardrail, crossed the center median, and flipped onto its side on the northbound lanes.
As Maryland drove northbound, his pickup truck collided with the overturned truck and burst into flames. He died on impact.
The box truck’s driver, a 31-year-old man from Peterson, Pennsylvania, was not hurt in the crash. Officials confirmed that charges are pending against him as the investigation continues.
Police suspect that fatigue may have contributed to the box truck driver’s loss of control.
The crash forced the closure of the northbound lanes of I-95 for several hours, significantly disrupting the morning traffic flow in the area.
