Fatal Mifflin Township fire death of John Phillip, Jr.
Authorities have confirmed that 66-year-old John Phillip, Jr. died following a devastating house fire on May 30 in Mifflin Township. The Franklin County Coroner’s Office stated that Phillip sustained fatal burns covering 98% of his body.
Emergency crews responded to a residence on the 2600 block of Baughman Avenue after neighbors reported thick smoke and visible flames. Upon their arrival, firefighters were informed by a man outside the home that his brother was still inside the burning structure.
Crews quickly entered the house and located Phillip, who was already deceased. The fire was brought under control shortly after, according to Mifflin Township Fire Chief Brian Dunlevy.
An autopsy report released on June 20 ruled the death accidental, citing thermal injuries as the primary cause. The report also noted contributing factors such as chronic alcohol use and tobacco smoking.
Investigators continue to look into the origin of the fire, though officials have stated there is no indication of foul play.
