Fatal West Virginia flood death of Travis Creighton

Nineteen-year-old Travis Creighton has been identified as one of the eight victims who died in the devastating flash floods that struck northern West Virginia on Saturday, June 14.

Travis was at home with his family watching a movie when they were alerted that a nearby creek was rapidly rising. While his father, Brian, went to move vehicles to higher ground, the home’s foundation gave way, causing the house to collapse with Travis, his mother Donna, and their three dogs inside.

Swept into the creek, Travis and his mother held onto each other through the rushing water. They briefly got separated, then reconnected. During their final separation, Travis urged her to “Swim, Mommy! Swim!” before they were pulled apart once more.

Donna survived the incident with bruises but no serious injuries. Brian later said he believes his son helped save her life in those final moments.

Travis had recently started working at the same company as his father, and the two shared cherished morning rides to work. He had just completed his high school equivalent and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout.

Described by his sister Shelby as kind-hearted, humorous, and full of life, Travis was known for his selfless nature and the way he brightened every room. His family is now mourning both the personal loss and the destruction of their home.

A GoFundMe has been launched to support the family’s efforts to rebuild and honor Travis’s memory with a proper burial.
