La’Marintae Swift dies in fatal Omaha shooting

Fatal Omaha shooting death of La’Marintae Swift

La’Marintae Swift, a 16-year-old junior at Omaha Burke High School, was killed during a shooting at a birthday party early Sunday morning near 24th and Decatur Streets.

Swift was one of six people shot at the gathering of about 100 attendees. He was reportedly shot outside before walking inside, where paramedics found him. Despite being rushed to Nebraska Medical Center, Swift was pronounced dead. The other five victims—ranging in age from 25 to 34—sustained injuries but are expected to survive.

Police believe the shooting occurred at a rented event venue and have made no arrests so far. Authorities are urging anyone who was present to come forward, stressing the importance of avoiding retaliation, which could cause further harm to the community.

Swift’s death is Omaha’s 18th homicide this year and the first youth victim of gun violence in 2025, marking a tragic milestone for the city’s ongoing struggle with gun-related incidents.
