Fatal St. Louis County bicycle crash death of David Crawford
David Crawford, an 85-year-old man from Dupo, Illinois, was fatally struck by a vehicle while riding his bicycle in St. Louis County on Thursday afternoon.
The collision took place near the 9900 block of Big Bend Boulevard at approximately 12:27 p.m., close to the popular Grant’s Trail area. Responding officers discovered Crawford at the scene with life-threatening injuries.
Crawford had been struck while riding through a crosswalk beneath the Grant’s Trail sign, according to Sgt. Matt Hauck of the St. Louis County Police Department.
Emergency responders transported him to a local hospital, but he was later pronounced dead due to the severity of his injuries.
The driver involved remained at the crash site and is said to be cooperating with investigators.
Authorities noted that the crosswalk allows just 15 seconds for pedestrians and cyclists to cross, raising concerns about safety timing.
While detectives continue examining the events leading up to the fatal impact, police have emphasized the importance of vigilance from both drivers and cyclists at trail crossings.
Accident Reconstruction detectives and Crimes Against Persons detectives shut down traffic on Big Bend Boulevard for about two and a half hours to carry out their investigation.
Police are urging anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact the St. Louis County Police Department at 636-529-8210.
