Fatal Beverly plane crash death of Geoffrey Andrews

Geoffrey Andrews was identified by his family as the man who died in a small aircraft crash in Beverly, Massachusetts, on Thursday. The incident happened shortly after takeoff near the Beverly Regional Airport along Sam Fonzo Drive in an industrial area. Another man who was aboard the aircraft was critically hurt, though his name has not been disclosed and his current medical condition remains unknown.

In a public statement, Andrews’ relatives expressed their gratitude to investigators and conveyed hope for a comprehensive probe into what led to the tragic accident. They also shared their prayers for the injured passenger and extended their support to his family.

According to his loved ones, Andrews was employed as a staff scientist at MIT Lincoln Laboratory. He previously earned his undergraduate degree at Lehigh University and went on to receive a Ph.D. from Purdue University. Flying was one of his passions, and he had been training to become a certified flight instructor.

He is survived by his wife, Gentry, who is currently pregnant with their first child, expected in October. His family described him as a warm, generous individual with a deep love for those around him, adding that he had been looking forward to becoming a father.

Authorities reported that the plane, a Mooney M20F, was in the process of taking off when the crash occurred. It had just departed from Beverly and was en route to Ticonderoga Municipal Airport in New York.

Eyewitnesses at the airport claimed they saw a burst of smoke just before the plane began a slow, descending left turn, ultimately leading to the crash. This detail may point to a possible engine malfunction, as suggested by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).

The NTSB confirmed that a preliminary summary of the crash’s cause is expected within two weeks.
