Fatal Footscray assault death of Dominic O’Brien

Dominic O’Brien, 62, has been identified as the man who died six days after being critically injured in an alleged assault at a shopping strip in Footscray, Melbourne. The incident occurred just before 10 a.m. last Sunday in an open-air mall area.

O’Brien, a seasoned photographer who had contributed to several media organizations including Nine’s The Age, was taken to the hospital in critical condition following the altercation. He succumbed to his injuries earlier today.

Authorities arrested a 43-year-old man with no fixed address a few hours after the incident. At the time, he was charged with intentionally causing serious injury. Following O’Brien’s death, police are now considering upgrading the charges depending on the outcome of a postmortem examination.

Investigators allege that the suspect is a former immigration detainee who had been released from indefinite detention last year after a High Court decision. At the time of the incident, he was wearing an ankle monitoring device.

The suspect has been remanded in custody and is expected to appear in court again in October as the investigation continues.
