Ethan Wence Perry, a 24-year-old individual, was pronounced dead at the scene following a serious automobile collision that transpired in the early morning hours of Saturday. The incident unfolded near the intersection of West Bridge Street and High Streets in the Historic Dublin area, with initial reports indicating it occurred at approximately 2:56 a.m.
Investigators identified Kirk Douglas Barton, a 40-year-old man from Lewis Center, as the driver involved in the fatal accident. Barton is currently charged with aggravated vehicular homicide, along with driving under the influence, according to local law enforcement. The crash involved Barton operating a Ford F150 Raptor pickup truck at a reported high speed on U.S. 33/S.R. 161, as he entered the Historic Dublin section and struck a Lexus vehicle on West Bridge Street.
The Lexus driver, Ethan Wence Perry, who was traveling eastbound on West Bridge Street, did not survive the impact. Meanwhile, Barton sustained minor injuries and was treated and released from Riverside Methodist Hospital after receiving medical attention.
Barton, who is recognized as the co-founder of the Buckeye Scoop, a well-known yet divisive online news platform focused on Ohio State University, has faced multiple legal and professional issues in the past. Following his football career at Ohio State, which spanned from 2003 to 2007 and earned him All-American honors as a right tackle in 2007, Barton has been involved in various controversies.
In 2021, Ohio State banned Barton from attending university events after it was discovered that Buckeye Scoop had utilized unauthorized video footage from team practices, leading to internal information leaks. Additionally, in 2018, Barton was charged with assaulting a security official during the Memorial Golf Tournament. Prior to these incidents, Barton accumulated several traffic-related citations, as noted by NBC 4 in Columbus.
The crash is currently under investigation by police, and Buckeye Scoop issued a statement expressing shock and sympathy over the event. In a post on social media, the outlet conveyed condolences for the victim’s family and indicated they were collecting further details as the situation develops.
