Shalini Singh dies in fatal Glanbrook Landfill incident
Fatal Glanbrook Landfill incident involving remains identified as Shalini Singh
Hamilton police announced today that 42-year-old Jeffrey Smith, the common-law partner of missing woman Shalini Singh, has been charged with second-degree murder and indignity to human remains following the identification of her remains at the Glanbrook Landfill.
Forensic analysis confirmed the remains discovered at the Caledonia, Ontario, site on May 21 belonged to Singh, who had been reported missing nearly eleven months prior. Police began searching the landfill on February 24th as part of their investigation into her disappearance.
Det. Sgt. Daryl Reid addressed the media at a Monday news conference, stating the Centre of Forensic Sciences had definitively identified the remains. Authorities arrested Smith in a Burlington parking lot after this confirmation. Singh was last seen on December 4th, 2024, though family notified police approximately a week later on December 10th.
Investigators suggested foul play, proposing Singh may have been removed from her building via the garbage disposal system. Surveillance footage from 40 cameras at her downtown Hamilton apartment building was meticulously reviewed, but no footage showed her leaving after December 4th. Reid emphasized police believe Smith acted alone and no other suspects are being sought.
The landfill search, which began on February 24th, continues this week with officials acknowledging the challenging conditions. “Officers are exposed to all elements,” Reid noted, “especially with the current heat making conditions extremely difficult.”
Singh’s boyfriend was reported missing simultaneously but located unharmed on December 11th. The family has been notified of the case development, though Reid acknowledged the confirmation remains “a shock” to them.
Further details regarding the investigation and landfill search progress were not immediately available.
