Andrew E. Verwers, a 53-year-old pedestrian, died after being struck by a truck near the intersection of Merle Hay Road and Hickman Road in Des Moines, according to the Des Moines Police Department. The incident occurred on Monday night when officers and firefighters responded to reports of a pedestrian versus vehicle collision. Paramedics transported the injured man to a nearby hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries.
The DMPD reported that witnesses stated Verwers was hit by a Dodge Ram pickup traveling eastbound on Hickman Road. The vehicle crossed the median and collided with the victim, who was standing in the median at the time. The suspect vehicle then fled the scene but was later located in the 2500 block of 44th Street.
Prior to the fatal crash, the same truck was reported to another agency for allegedly crossing the center line and hitting a curb. The driver’s identity remains undisclosed, and authorities have not filed charges at this time. The investigation into Mr. Verwers’ death is currently ongoing.
