Fatal Homewood Alabama shooting death of Jabari Latrell Peoples

Homewood police confirmed that Jabari Latrell Peoples, an 18-year-old from Aliceville, was shot by an officer at the Homewood Soccer Park on Monday, June 23, 2025. The incident led police to state the fatal shooting was recorded on body camera footage, with plans to show the family the video.

Peoples’ family publicly expressed their belief that the deceased teenager was unarmed and cooperative, contradicting the official police account. The authorities reported that during a struggle, the individual managed to retrieve a handgun, allegedly creating a lethal threat to the officer.

A statement released Wednesday by the Homewood Police Department acknowledged the tragedy and expressed sympathy for the family. Despite the short time elapsed, Peoples succumbed to his injuries at UAB Hospital, according to police reports.

The fatal shooting occurred Monday evening around 9:30 p.m. at the Homewood Soccer Park located in the 1800 block of South Lakeshore Drive near Columbiana Road. Police indicated there had been an uptick in criminal activity in the area recently.

A veteran officer noticed a vehicle parked in a secluded part of the soccer park and approached it in his marked cruiser. Upon approaching, the officer detected the smell of marijuana and ordered the two people inside out of the car.

When the driver, identified as Jabari Latrell Peoples, exited, the officer observed a handgun in the open driver’s side door pocket. Attempts to arrest Peoples for marijuana possession apparently led to a physical altercation.

According to the police statement, a struggle broke out, and after the officer was thrown to the ground, Peoples retrieved the weapon, posing an immediate danger. The officer then fired one shot in self-defense, complying with Alabama law.

After the shot was fired, the officer commanded Peoples to release the weapon. Backup arrived within about two minutes and began administering emergency medical care. Despite the prompt response, Jabari Latrell Peoples was transported to UAB Hospital and unfortunately died.

Police maintain that the officer involved in the shooting secured the scene and preserved the body camera footage. Efforts are underway to share this video with the victim’s family.

Jabari Latrell Peoples’ family issued a social media statement demanding further investigation and the release of official reports and footage. They claimed another individual, in an unmarked vehicle, initiated contact before the shooting.

Aliceville Mayor Terrence E. Windham has also requested the family be granted access to the video evidence. This tragic event has deeply affected the local community, prompting calls for transparency.
