Fatal Mount Rinjani hiking death of Juliana Marins

Juliana Marins, a 26-year-old tourist from Brazil, tragically died after falling from a cliff while hiking Mount Rinjani, an active volcano located on Indonesia’s Lombok Island, on June 21, 2025.

According to reports, Marins was hiking with a group around 6:30 a.m. local time when she slipped and fell from a steep trail near the volcano’s crater. Her disappearance triggered a multi-day search operation led by the Indonesian Search and Rescue Agency.

On June 24, rescuers located her body after four days of challenging search efforts hindered by bad weather and rough terrain. The Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the discovery and expressed condolences to her family and friends over the loss.

Her family later posted on social media accusing the rescue team of failing to act swiftly. “If the team had reached her within the expected seven hours, she could still be alive,” they wrote, calling the delay an act of negligence. “We are now seeking justice for Juliana. She deserved more.”

The national park confirmed that a joint effort involving multiple agencies and volunteers was required to retrieve her body from the rugged site. She was then transported to Bhayangkara Hospital in Indonesia.

Juliana’s father, Manoel Marins, who identified her remains, criticized the Brazilian government and embassy for their lack of support during the ordeal. He expressed frustration over being ignored, saying officials offered no assistance despite the seriousness of the situation.

Her sister Marianna echoed the criticism, claiming that misleading updates were shared about Juliana receiving food and water and accused the Indonesian authorities of providing false information. The family also suggested a video of her “rescue” had been manipulated.

Authorities from both Indonesia and Brazil have yet to respond to the family’s accusations.
