Newton police have confirmed the death of a 21-year-old man following an incident in Conover. According to reports, officers attempted to pull over a motorcycle on U.S. Highway 70 on Thursday, June 26, after observing traffic infractions. The driver, identified as Camden Skyler Childers from Stanley, failed to comply with the stop and accelerated away from the scene.

The pursuit resulted in a collision between the motorcycle and a police vehicle on Northern Drive NW in Conover. Shortly after, a brief altercation occurred, during which officers discharged their weapons. Childers was transported to a hospital but did not survive his injuries.

As per departmental procedure, the involved officer is currently on administrative leave pending a full investigation by both the Newton Police Department and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation. No details regarding the officer’s identity have been released to the public.

The incident unfolded at approximately 11:56 p.m. local time and is being treated as a case of officer-involved shooting. Childers was initially accused of multiple traffic violations, including speeding and reckless driving, as well as resisting law enforcement.
