Fatal Daviess Co. shooting death of Anthony Scott Smalls
The Daviess County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that a person shot on Thursday did not survive their injuries after receiving medical treatment.
Officials released the name of the deceased as Anthony Scott Smalls, a 38-year-old man.
The incident occurred around 8 p.m. Thursday on Saint Anthony Road, near US Highway 431 in the Brown’s Valley area. According to reports, Smalls was struck once in the chest by a handgun bullet fired from close range.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene and provided aid, transporting Smalls to Owensboro Health Regional Hospital. Despite efforts to save him, the victim later passed away.
An autopsy conducted by officials revealed that the bullet entered Smalls’s heart, damaged his aorta and a small portion of his lung, and lodged in his spine.
The authorities identified the suspect as Darrin Ray Carter.
Investigators stated that Smalls was not residing at the location where the shooting took place but was visiting at the time. He was shot when the homeowner opened the door as he arrived.
Following the shooting, Carter attempted to conceal the weapon on nearby property before returning to the scene just before law enforcement arrived.
The Sheriff’s Department noted that no prior argument or conflict was involved in the incident.
Carter has been charged with multiple offenses, including second-degree manslaughter, possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, and tampering with evidence.
The case is currently under investigation, and further updates are expected as information becomes available.
