A widely admired youth sports official passed away during the recent weekend while performing his duties amidst a severe heat wave. Mitchell Huggins, a 61-year-old man, was transported to a medical facility on Saturday after collapsing while working a softball event at Patriot Park.
His sibling, Pamela Rufus, expressed that her brother passed away while actively engaged in his passion, which was officiating games for children within the local sports complex. The sibling received initial notification via a telephone contact from their child.
Rufus reported that she was able to establish visual contact with her brother through a video call when he briefly regained consciousness, but he subsequently lost consciousness again. She described his condition as “lifeless” upon the second collapse, stating he did not appear to be himself.
The sibling further remarked that all personnel present at the game location attempted resuscitation efforts while participants and observers prayed for the individual. Mitchell Huggins was eventually confirmed deceased at the hospital facility.
Organizers overseeing the tournament activities were informed by public figures connected to the youth participants regarding their concerns about the high temperatures affecting the continuation of the competition.
A representative from Sumter County issued a statement expressing awareness of the unfortunate incident and requested expressions of sympathy for the family of Mitchell Huggins. The tournament management unit did not offer immediate responses to inquiries seeking additional information on the situation.
Rufus emphasized that her brother’s dedication to his role was unwavering, stating he died while fulfilling his life’s passion, which involved serving as an umpire in youth sports settings for more than ten years. Some of the young participants affectionately addressed him as “Uncle Mitch” or “Mr. Mitch.” She described umpiring youth sports as his primary dedication and a place of personal fulfillment.
According to his sibling, Huggins conveyed awareness of the elevated temperatures but maintained a determination to continue with his responsibilities. Rufus acknowledged that the temperature conditions were excessive and potentially hazardous.
Mitchell Huggins was also deeply involved in Top Gun Sports, a charitable organization committed to supporting youth athletic programs. Rufus identified this group as another significant focus in his life.
The sibling expressed a desire for her brother’s death to stimulate increased attention regarding the dangers of extreme heat and associated health risks. She decided against pursuing the narrative as the central aspect of her brother’s remembrance, choosing instead to highlight his professional commitment and his care for the young participants he supervised.
Funeral arrangements were being prepared, with an event honoring Huggins’s life scheduled for the upcoming Saturday at a former educational institution location on Kemper Street.
