Fatal Asheville fiery crash death of William Robinson
The Asheville Police Department is investigating a fatal crash that occurred Thursday afternoon. According to reports, the incident took place around 1:55 p.m. on I-40 East near mile marker 45.
Identified as William Robinson, a 56-year-old male, was driving eastbound when his 1980 Chevrolet Corvette likely suffered a mechanical issue. This caused the vehicle to stop unexpectedly in the center lane.
Subsequently, an eastbound 2016 Ford Escape struck the stationary Corvette from behind. This collision ignited a fire within the Corvette.
The Asheville Fire Department responded quickly, extinguishing the flames in the burning vehicle. Despite these efforts, Robinson was pronounced deceased at the scene.
I-40 East remained closed for approximately three and a half hours as police and emergency crews worked at the accident site.
