Surrey police are examining a reported gunfire incident from Thursday evening, June 26th. Bilal Hameed, a 21-year-old man known to authorities, has died as a result of this violent attack in a residential neighborhood.
Surrey Police Service confirms responding officers were dispatched to the Whalley area, specifically around 129 Street and 10800 block, following reports of gunfire at approximately 7:40 PM on June 26th. A significant police presence, including multiple vehicles and emergency services, secured the location.
Emergency responders discovered a man with critical injuries. Homicide investigators stated Hameed was operating a vehicle when struck by gunfire. Despite attempts to save his life, he did not survive the incident.
The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) is now leading this investigation. Police released a statement indicating the probe is in its preliminary stages. While the motive remains under examination, officials suggested the incident does not appear random. Later updates confirmed the nature of the shooting was targeted.

Investigators located a severely damaged black Dodge pickup truck associated with the incident in the 184 Street vicinity, specifically the 9400-block. Sgt. This tragic event occurs shortly after another homicide investigation in Surrey involving Satwinder Sharma, who was killed on June 11th. While Thursday’s shooting is not connected to extortion, preliminary assessments suggest links to organized criminal activity.

Surrey has experienced several gun-related deaths this year, with two involving police actions currently under separate investigation. IHIT continues to examine other recent fatal shootings, including an incident from March 3rd and one involving Sharma.
Looking at historical data, Surrey reported 25 homicides in 2013, a record previously thought to be set in 2005. Statistics for recent years show fluctuations: 9 homicides in 2024, 12 in 2023, 21 in 2022, 10 in 2021, 12 in 2020, and 21 in 2019. Since IHIT began handling homicides in 2003, they’ve resolved 206 cases out of 366, achieving a clearance rate of approximately 56%.
