Fatal Gresham shooting death of Ladarius Collins

Multnomah County officials have determined that a sheriff’s deputy who fatally shot an armed suspect in Gresham, Oregon, acted within the boundaries of state law. The District Attorney’s office has concluded that the use of deadly force was justified.

On June 13th, responding law enforcement units arrived at Cameron Park Apartments in Gresham following multiple emergency calls reporting a physical altercation between two men. An individual familiar with the incident later confirmed that Ladarius Collins was involved in the confrontation and was seen brandishing a firearm.

According to witness accounts, Collins escalated the situation by pointing his weapon at those attempting to separate the brothers. He reportedly held his sibling by the neck while keeping a gun to his head. The brother mentioned suffering a blunt force trauma to the head during the incident, and the entire confrontation was captured on multiple law enforcement body cameras.

As Collins fled the scene, Gresham police secured an arrest warrant for charges including third-degree assault, menacing, and improper weapon use. MCSO Deputy Adam Suboh located Collins as he was evading officers by crossing private property and scaling barriers, including while with his companion.

Upon closing in, approximately twenty yards away, Suboh observed Collins directly brandish a handgun before the deputy fired. Collins subsequently fell to the ground beside his weapon. Suboh instructed bystanders to keep away from the firearm while medical personnel were summoned.

Despite emergency treatment, Collins was pronounced dead at the hospital. Preliminary reports indicated a gunshot entered behind his left shoulder, and protocol required Suboh to be placed on administrative leave pending the Major Crimes Team’s investigation.

Multnomah County District Attorney Nathan Vasquez expressed profound sorrow over the incident, stating, “Mr. Collins’ death was tragic, and its impact on the family and community cannot be understated. I am deeply sorry for their loss.”

Further reports indicated the fatal shooting investigation concluded Suboh’s actions were lawful under Oregon’s use-of-force protocols.
