PHILLIPS COUNTY, Kansas — During a Friday night arrest attempt, a Phillips County Sheriff’s Deputy was fatally shot while trying to apprehend a suspect who had reported illegal fireworks. The incident occurred while responding to the initial reports.

Deputy Brandon Gaede attempted to secure Kolton Griffith, 27, of Phillipsburg, with handcuffs. A brief struggle ensued, and during this time, Griffith retrieved a hidden weapon and fired at the deputy. Despite being injured, Gaede managed to return fire, inflicting multiple wounds on the suspect.

Griffith succumbed to his injuries at the scene. However, Deputy Gaede was transported to a nearby hospital where he later passed away due to his injuries.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation has taken over the ongoing probe into the fatal shooting incident.

Deputy Gaede, aged 30, leaves behind his wife and three young children as survivors.
