A Chautauqua County law enforcement official confirms that Mark Bemis was killed during a police operation on June 18th. The incident occurred within Chautauqua County.

Following reports of a disturbance at a residence on Mina French Creek Road, two law enforcement officers from the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office arrived on the scene later that afternoon. According to the Sheriff’s Office, they encountered Bemis outside with a shotgun.

Officials state that officers attempted to defuse the situation but eventually faced resistance. During this confrontation, Bemis fired his shotgun at the deputies. Both officers then returned fire and fatally shot the suspect. Medical personnel provided on-site care, but Bemis did not survive his injuries.

The suspect’s shotgun was recovered at the scene by responding officers. The identities of the deputies involved have not been released. One deputy reportedly suffered minor hand injuries during the incident.

The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office, the county district attorney’s office, and the forensic identification team are examining the events leading to this fatal shooting. Additionally, the New York Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigations has announced it is opening its own investigation into this case.
