A regrettable vehicular collision on Red White and Blue Road resulted in three fatalities and two injuries, authorities reported Friday evening. The roadway near Ruth Linny Road was temporarily closed for the duration of the investigation.
Initial reports indicated a head-on collision between a northbound Jeep Liberty and a southbound Nissan Altima. The occupants of the Jeep included Randy Johnson, who was pronounced deceased at the accident location. The Highway Patrol noted that Johnson, a resident of Wilkesboro, was not secured in his seat.
The driver of the Altima, identified as Johnathan Laws, 34, from Roaring River, sustained critical injuries necessitating airlift to Hugh Chatham Health. Tragically, Laws, who served as a Wilkes County sheriff deputy, succumbed to his wounds at the medical institution. A female passenger in the rear seat, Vickie Key, 72, of Roaring River, also perished at the scene. Two other individuals involved were transported for non-life-threatening issues.
Wilkes County EMS conveyed profound sorrow regarding the incident. They announced, “Emergency services, law enforcement, and fire departments throughout Wilkes County are experiencing significant grief due to this substantial loss.” The organization anticipates issuing an official statement subsequently and requested community understanding.
The preliminary examination by the Highway Patrol did not uncover evidence of excessive velocity or alcohol impairment. The thorough on-scene investigation necessitated the temporary closure of Red White and Blue Road for approximately two hours. Emergency medical services and law enforcement personnel diligently provided care and support.
