Fatal Santa Ana hit-and-run death of David Westman

Law enforcement officials confirmed the apprehension of a 63-year-old individual connected to a fatal pedestrian collision in Santa Ana that resulted in a man’s death. This announcement came Monday.

The preliminary report from the Santa Ana Police Department indicates the incident occurred shortly before 5:30 a.m. on Sunday, located at the intersection of Harbor Boulevard and Hazard Avenue.

Responding officers discovered an individual without response in the southbound lanes of Harbor Boulevard. This person was later identified as David Westman, aged 46, who resided in Santa Ana. Medical personnel from the Orange County Fire Authority arrived and determined Westman was deceased at the scene.

Investigators state Westman was walking westbound in the southbound Harbor Boulevard traffic lanes when he was contacted by a vehicle traveling southbound. The suspect driver then departed the scene prior to the arrival of law enforcement.

The Santa Ana Police Department’s Collision Investigation Unit (CIU) initiated the investigation into the incident.

Following some time spent pursuing leads, detectives located the suspect and their vehicle within Orange. With aid from patrol units, the 63-year-old driver, Miguel Ocampo from Tustin, was taken into custody and processed at the Santa Ana Jail for the charge of a hit-and-run causing death. The Collision Investigation Unit continues its examination.
