Law enforcement officials announced charges against a female driver following a deadly intersection accident in Dare County on Sunday morning. Initial reports indicated the collision occurred shortly after 9 a.m. on US-64 near East Lake.

Investigators concluded that the incident involved a 35-year-old woman driving a Mercedes SUV. This driver attempted to bypass slower traffic by entering the opposite direction of travel. This maneuver resulted in a direct impact with another vehicle, a Toyota SUV, driven by a 31-year-old woman.

The driver of the struck vehicle, identified as Callie Ann Coltrain Coward, was pronounced deceased at the accident site. The driver of the Mercedes, Tiffany Phillips, was formally charged with vehicular misdemeanor death and reckless driving. Emergency medical services transported Phillips to a regional hospital for treatment, though the severity of her injuries remains unknown. One passenger in the Mercedes received non-critical medical attention, while the infant passenger suffered no injuries.
