Howard Heyliger dies in fatal Colorado Springs shooting

Fatal Colorado Springs shooting death of Howard Heyliger

Police have identified the suspect and the deceased involved in the fatal late-evening shooting Thursday at the intersection of East Platte Avenue and North Cedar Street. This incident is reported as a road-rage related fatality.

Law enforcement stated that around 11:45 p.m. on Thursday, several vehicles were approaching the intersection east of downtown when a confrontation arose between two drivers. These drivers stopped their vehicles and engaged in a heated verbal dispute which quickly became physical. Authorities allege one driver retrieved a weapon and discharged it towards the other individual.

The victim, identified as Matthew Helberg, a 39-year-old resident of Colorado Springs, was found deceased at the scene.

On Monday, the Colorado Springs Police Department announced that 31-year-old Howard Heyliger, also from Colorado Springs, is the suspected individual who fired the weapon. Heyliger was arrested and is being held on suspicion of second-degree murder. His initial court date is set for July 8th.
