Fatal Shafter shooting death of Alberto Garcia Hernandez Duran Jr.
Law enforcement concluded a multi-hour operation in Shafter, leading to the apprehension of a person tied to a deadly incident on California’s Highway 5. This arrest followed an extensive search. The incident involved a fatal shooting.
Investigators from the California Highway Patrol Central Division’s Investigative Services Unit have charged Juan Humberto Loza, a 28-year-old from Shafter, with partaking in a shooting that ended the life of a man. This happened on June 30, 2025. Loza was taken into custody for multiple felony allegations, including murder.
According to reports from the California Highway Patrol, on the morning of June 30, around 10 a.m., the Bakersfield dispatch center relayed an emergency about an automobile on the right side of southbound Highway 5, located south of Highway 46.
Upon arrival, authorities discovered a 38-year-old individual, identified as Alberto Garcia Hernandez Duran Jr., who had suffered multiple gunshot wounds inside his car. Medical personnel transported him to a hospital, but he did not survive the injuries.
Further examination indicated that Loza was responsible for firing several shots at the victim and his vehicle. The evidence pointed to his direct involvement in the violence.
Efforts by law enforcement on July 1, 2025, successfully located Loza in the 18800 block of Beech Avenue in Shafter. Early that morning, officers attempted to stop Loza’s car but he fled into nearby orchards near San Diego Street and Highway 43.
After a considerable search, officers managed to capture Loza. At the site of his arrest, authorities recovered a handgun and his automobile.
