Law enforcement authorities have confirmed the identity of the individual who lost his life following an incident involving a law enforcement officer in the town of Putney. The officer involved in the use of force has been identified as Trooper Peter Romeo, an employee with the Vermont State Police since 2022.
The individual who was fatally wounded during the incident was identified as Scott Garvey, a 55-year-old resident. Reports indicate that Garvey lived within the apartment building complex where the event took place.
The circumstances surrounding the incident appear to have initially stemmed from a reported psychological health emergency, involving a male who was reportedly confined within one of the residential units. Nearby residents had previously voiced concerns about potentially threatening conduct exhibited by the individual.
State police records indicate that officers arrived at the scene around 4:30 p.m. According to official statements, troopers observed what they believed to be a weapon being held in Garvey’s hands. Following a lack of response to verbal commands, law enforcement personnel initiated the use of force.
The fatal injury was sustained to Garvey’s upper body region, with an additional wound reported on his lower left extremity.
