Demetrius Antwan Davis Jr., a 25-year-old man originally from Birmingham, met his demise Sunday evening following a fatal shooting incident at a Circle K gas station. Local news sources reported that Davis Jr. was filling his vehicle’s fuel tank around 6 p.m. when unidentified individuals approached and opened fire. The attack occurred while Davis Jr.’s car remained at the pump, with the fuel nozzle still attached. Responding law enforcement personnel discovered the victim in the parking area without any apparent pulse or signs of life.
The suspect apprehended by authorities remains Byron Dedric Steele, a 51-year-old resident. Steele was taken into custody the following afternoon and formally charged with capital murder the next day. Police investigations suggest Steele was holding a personal grudge against Davis Jr., stemming from previous family-related conflicts.
Emergency service providers arrived at the scene and pronounced Davis Jr. deceased on the spot. This tragic event represents the ninth homicide that has transpired within a span of just over a week in the Birmingham region. Davis Jr.’s untimely demise mirrors the circumstances surrounding his father’s fatal shooting incident at a gas station nearly five years ago.
Police spokesperson Officer Truman Fitzgerald expressed that investigators believe the recent victims, including Davis Jr., may have been engaged in activities that unfortunately made them targets. “It’s unfortunate but clear that individuals involved in certain activities are at higher risk,” Fitzgerald explained. “We are not trying to shame victims, but we must make sure citizens are aware that negative actions can unfortunately attract dangerous consequences.”
