Austin Mathias Dies in Fatal Berne Car Crash
Fatal Berne car crash death of Austin Mathias
According to reports from the Ohio State Highway Patrol, a serious collision on U.S. Route 33 resulted in the death of a man from Ashville on Sunday afternoon, July 13th, 2025.
The unfortunate incident took place around midday, specifically just before 1 p.m., in Berne Township. Officials stated that the two vehicles involved – a 1999 Ford Ranger and a 2022 Mazda pickup truck – were both heading east when the driver of the newer vehicle apparently did not keep a sufficient distance from the vehicle ahead. This led to a rear-end collision.
The force of the impact caused the older pickup truck, driven by Austin Mathias, who was 23 years old, to leave the roadway. It then collided with a traffic sign and flipped over. Tragically, Austin Mathias was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.
The 21-year-old driver of the Mazda pickup truck involved in the crash received medical evaluation but was later discharged from the hospital. Their name has not been released to the public.
