The Los Angeles Police Department is examining a fatal shooting incident involving officers that happened on the evening of July 10 in the city’s 77th Street Division region. This case stems from a confrontation with a suspect who was armed.
Initial reports indicate the incident began at approximately 6:20 p.m. near Crenshaw Boulevard, located just south of Hyde Park Boulevard. Police officers observed a man, later confirmed as 63-year-old James Tullous, exiting a parked vehicle while holding a handgun.
Tullous then walked onto the sidewalk and became involved in a physical dispute with another individual. As officers approached to intervene, Tullous reportedly fired one shot. In response, the officers discharged their weapons, hitting Tullous, who then fell to the ground.
The officers provided medical assistance until the Los Angeles Fire Department arrived. Tullous was pronounced dead at the scene by the department.
Subsequent investigation revealed that the initial encounter started as a verbal argument. The other person involved in the altercation was not injured, and no officers or members of the public sustained any harm during the event.
A semi-automatic handgun was discovered at the scene and is being stored as evidence.
The LAPD emphasized that the investigation is ongoing, and the details provided are based on early stages. They stated that their comprehension of the facts might change as additional evidence is collected and examined.
The Force Investigation Division is continuing its evaluation of witness testimonies, physical and digital evidence, and forensic materials pertinent to this case.
